Pinnacle were appointed to carry out the conservation repair work to the Portico of the North Court of Castle Howard, along with undertaking conservation repairs to the embellished pulvinated frieze.
As part of our works to the North Portico at Castle Howard, we needed to understand it’s construction and repair evolution prior to the works commencing.
From an early survey we established that an early iron frame was installed, we believe fairly shortly after it’s construction, to help support huge single stone header beam which spans between the columns, above the principal entrance. The iron frame, being partially exposed to the elements, had corroded over time and degraded the stone immediately within it’s vicinity. As part of the 2021 repairs, we cleaned and treated the beam where it was exposed and stained it to blend more sympathetically with the adjacent masonry. The header masonry was repaired with matching stone, tightly jointed to minimise the visual impact of the repair. The pics show the before and works in progress.’
Our skilled craftsmen worked to recreate the classical characters faces, carved indent to the RHS decorative frieze using Eskdale stone from Aislaby Quarry.
